Buda to get major retail center - 2004-08-30 - Austin Business Journal
Just landed in Austin for my blogging workshop at Wizard Academy tomorrow and I had to swing by the construction zone (it's really too big to be a construction site) of the Cabela's development here.
The earthmovers are out in force getting the land ready for a big, big deal. It's hard to tell from my photo, but the preparation extends all the way to the row of houses in the back of the field. It's not happening in a corner of this field. This field or former ranch IS the project.
Reaction to the Cabela's announcement of a store in Utah includes this story out of Reno where the development people are talking openly with the press about a letter of intent. Funny thing is that here in Sidney, you don't hear these things on the street because the Cabela's people play things pretty close to the vest.
Officials at Boomtown Hotel and Casino in Verdi, off Interstate 80 west of Reno, said negotiations with the retailer are moving forward in accordance with a letter of intent the company signed to open there.Cabela’s still could come to Nevada

SIDNEY, Neb.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 17, 2004--Cabela's Incorporated (NYSE:CAB), the nation's largest direct marketer, and a leading specialty retailer, of hunting, fishing, camping and related outdoor merchandise, announced today that the Company is in negotiations to build a 150,000-square-foot store near Lehi, Utah, and plans to have it open for business by late 2005. The store, to be built on a 50-acre site on Interstate 15 at the SR92 Alpine Highland Highway interchange in the Traverse Mountain Development near Thanksgiving Point, would be the Nebraska-based Company's thirteenth retail outlet, similar in size to the Cabela's retail showrooms in Owatonna, Minn. and Kansas City, Kan. The newest Cabela's store, a 175,000-square-foot facility in Wheeling, W.Va., opened August 12, 2004.
Dennis Highby, Cabela's President and Chief Executive Officer, commented, "As we previously stated, we have accelerated our retail store opening plan for fiscal 2005 and are thrilled to announce this new location in Lehi, Utah. 'Outdoorsman's Disneyland' Coming to UtahAug. 9, 2004
A major name for retail in outdoor and recreation appears to be headed to Utah. Cabelas is said to be planning to build near Point of the Mountain and Eyewitness News has learned an official announcement is coming soon.
We usually don't make a big deal about a new store planning to build. But in the world of the outdoors, this is the equivalent of the Disneyland of sporting goods stores.
Imagine a store bigger than a Super Wal-Mart, with more than just hunting, fishing and camping products, but an outdoors experience, indoors. Other Cabela's have become tourist attractions in and of themselves.
For example, Cabela's other 13 stores typically include a 60- thousand gallon aquarium, with fish native to the area; a waterfall and trout stream running inside the store; an indoor archery and gun range; a restaurant with a menu of wild game dishes; and of course a huge inventory of hunting, fishing and outdoor equipment.
No one from Cabelas or government leaders will talk about the possibility of the store, but Eyewitness News has learned an announcement is on the way, within the next few weeks.

Cabela's Interchange Ready By ANDY STAMP DALLAS PIKE - The ribbon was cut Tuesday on the new five-lane bridge over Interstate 70 that will serve as the interchange for traffic headed toward Cabela's in Dallas Pike. It's hard for most retailers to imagine preparing for a quarter-million humans to walk through their doors on any given weekend, but the grand opening of a Cabela's store isn't just any event.
There's no way to understand the thrill of speed without taking a few hot-laps on a track. Without climbing a mountain, you will never understand the allure that keeps you coming back for more.
Likewise, hunting and fishing must be experienced. The very real affliction called "buck fever" cannot be adequately described. No, it must be experienced. Fortunately for Cabela's, millions of Americans enjoy the thrill of the hunt and the challenge of landing a whopper of a fish. These monumental stores resonate with the adventure that stirs their soul.

"From a traffic perspective, we see well above-average (numbers of) visitors for the grand opening. For example, in Hamburg, I think it was (a total of) 250,000 (guests) that first weekend," said Castillo. The Intelligencer/Wheeling News-Register
